Fuel Pump on Pre-Crossflow standard engine

Diagnosis

First check there is actually fuel in the tank.

To investigate pump. The standard ‘glass bowl’ fuel pump is a mechanical lever/diaphragm device. A cam inside drives the fuel pump  bolted to the side of the engine. Unscrew and carefully remove glass bowl. Inspect pump diaphragm and replace if perished or split.

Oil leak under car – leaking pump to engine gasket – leads to engine oil loss onto floor under car – unlikely to be terminal but may be annoying and it will get the MOT guy all excited. To find oil leak inspect fuel pump to engine block gasket.

Repair

Unscrew and carefully remove glass bowl.

Inspect pump diaphragm and replace if perished or split.

To fix oil leak, detach fuel pump from engine block and fit new gasket.
