Defining terms
When using modern cable in older cars the current load and cable size differs from the original cables used during manufacture.
Wire is a generic term for extruded or stretched metal
Cable is a better term when describing the method of conducting power from one point to another.
For the purposes of this post the term ‘cable’ is used to describe the cables in a wiring loom (confused? me too!).
Diagnosis
To detemine the cable specification needed
- Work out the constant and peak current to be carried by the cable (see note below)
- Work out and allow for any voltage drop across cable length
12V Wire Size Calculator + Chart: What Size Wire You Need? (learnmetrics.com)
- Look up the cable core type and diameter needed e.g. copper, 1.5mm
- Decide the cable colour-pair to use
- Determine the length of cable required (then add an extra metre or two to allow for any under calculation)
Repair
Order cabling required e.g. 3m Green/White 1.5mm (16A)
Order terminations
Order heat shrink
For heavier gauges look up requirements (you can usually find what is needed on eBay.
